Although initially expensive, dental implants can actually save people money, according to a new report. Published in the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, the study found that dental implants are cheaper than traditional tooth replacement methods because they last a lot longer and are far more durable. Even so, dental bridges and dentures are easily the most popular prostheses. But that may soon change.
Dental implants are more popular than ever, mostly because people are living a lot longer. In the past, dentures were deemed acceptable because patients only wore them for a few years. Now, the average lifespan of a tooth replacement device is over a decade. As a result, patients are far more likely to invest in dental implants; and according to this new report, they are right to do so.
Drawing data from a decade of studies on the subject, the study found that implants are cheaper than traditional prostheses, especially when it came to single-tooth replacement. A dental bridge, by comparison, is far more expensive and troublesome when you only have only one tooth to replace. It can also increase the risk of gum diseases and even damage other teeth, whereas an implant is safe.
