Dr. Howard J. Hoffman DDS

TMJ/TMD:
Jaw, neck, ear, shoulder and facial pain.

Do you suffer from any of the following:

  • Aching or clicking jaw?
  • Grinding of your teeth?
  • Pain or discomfort in your face? Neck? Shoulders?
  • Numbness in the tips of your fingers? Hands?
  • Regular headaches? Dizziness?
  • Inability to fully open your mouth?

If you answer yes to any of the above questions, you may be experiencing Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD).

Your TMJ

Your Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the most complex joint in your entire body, connecting your jawbone to your skull with only muscles. This is completely unique to our body, no other joint connects this way.

TMD occurs when there is an imbalance between your jaw, skull, and the muscles attaching them. Because of this imbalance, your muscles experience spasms which ultimately create a misalignment of your jaw joints, creates a bad bite, and then develops into a repeating cycle of misalignment.  This results in pain in your face, neck, head, and shoulders.

Causes

Contributing factors to the causes of TMD may include: a direct or indirect trauma, removal of teeth for braces, muscle hyperactivity, stress, an incorrect bite, poor posture, grinding and improper occlusion.

TMJ Diagnosis – Treatment – Pain Relief.

For over 25 years, based on a patient’s need, I use specialized dimensional trackers, TENS therapy, ultrasound, sonography, physical therapy, massage, orthotics and neuromuscular dentistry to treat TMD.

My first step and goal is to get you of pain, which we can often do in a matter of days.

When your pain is under control and we have stabilized the jaw joint over period of  3 to 6 months, your teeth, muscles, and joint will work together in harmony, you will have restored function and stability.
